Update Mar 3 2017:
I reached out to get more info on the national availability of Ben & Jerry’s vegan line. I asked if “non-dairy flavours will be immediately available anywhere that Ben & Jerry‘s products are currently available, or if it will be a gradual roll out? If so, where can people expect to find it first?”
“It will be a gradual roll out! The non-dairy flavours will be available at most Shoppers Drug Marts, Loblaws, and Walmarts. It will likely be in “full distribution” by the end of March as stores gradually receive the product.”
The waiting game is over. Ben & Jerry’s vegan ice cream is here.
Almost a year after the initial release south of the border, we’ll finally be able to treat ourselves to Ben & Jerry’s vegan ice cream! The non-dairy pints will hit the frozen section of Canadian grocery stores on Monday, February 27.
In June 2015, the Vermont-based company announced that they would create a vegan ice cream product. The almond milk-based flavours continue to receive overwhelmingly positive reviews. According to Kirsten Schimoler, Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy queen of R&D (their words, not mine), that was no easy task. She said:
“Almond milk gave us the best blank canvas to carry the funky chunks and swirls that you know and love. We had to make it look like our ice cream, feel like our ice cream, and melt like our ice cream. The first 15 rounds was like throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what sticks. There was a lot of gross stuff at the beginning.”
Sounds like all that effort is paying dividends, as vegans all over Canada are eager to please their taste buds, with some willing to sign petitions to bring Ben & Jerry’s vegan flavours to Canada.
Certified Vegan, Fair Trade, and Non-GMO Verified.
After patiently (or impatiently) waiting almost a year, we get to taste it for ourselves. A Ben & Jerry’s press release confirms that Canadians stores will offer three Certified Vegan flavours, which are:
- Chocolate Fudge Brownie: Chocolate with Fudge Brownies from Greyston Bakery
- P.B. & Cookies: Vanilla with Chocolate Sandwich Cookies & Crunchy Peanut Butter Swirls
- Coffee Caramel Fudge: Coffee with Fudge Chunks & Caramel Swirls
The Coffee Caramel Fudge and P.B. & Cookies flavours are exclusive to the non-dairy line. MSRP is set $7.99 CAD per pint.
In addition to Certified Vegan, all three flavours are also Certified Fair Trade and Non-GMO Verified. Unfortunately, none of the three Canadian options are gluten-free.
There are currently seven non-dairy flavours available in the US. Three of them are brand new to the family. Caramel Almond Brittle really jumps out at me! I’ll hold out some hope that a few more flavours make their way north.
Where can you buy it?
Though the Canadian pricing and release date are set, Ben & Jerry’s states in the press release that the pints “will start rolling onto Canadian shelves on February 27, 2017.” It’s not entirely clear if the roll-out will happen all at once or gradually. I’ve reached out to Ben & Jerry’s for a comment and will post an update when I get a response.
In the meantime, you can search their website for retailers that carry Ben & Jerry’s products and check the locations near you. Let me know if you spot them in your area!
