The Best Donuts

Fried Yeast Donuts

Serves: 12 Cooking Time: 3 hours


  • โ€” Donuts โ€”
  • 3/4 tbsp dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 3/4 cup warm cashew milk (or other)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • Oil for frying
  • โ€” Icing โ€”
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable sortening
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp warm water



Dissolve the yeast in the water.


Add milk, sugar, salt, applesauce, shortening, and about half the flour. Mix for about 3 minutes so that it is well combined. Mix in the rest of the flour.


Cover and let them rise about 45 minutes at room temperature.


Roll on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick.


Use a cookie cutter or something round in whatever size you prefer. Be sure to have a small one to cut out the center.


Cover again and let rise 30 minutes.


Heat your oil to 350F.


Fry them without overcrowding. After a minute, turn once. They should be nice and golden.


Allow to cool on paper towel to remove excess oil.


For the glaze: Mix all ingredients together. Dip cooled donuts or spoon and spread. Sprinkle them while the icing is still wet, but not dripping down the sides too quickly.
